15 Action-Packed Movies Like John Wick

When John Wick hit theaters in 2014, nobody expected a simple revenge tale about a retired assassin and his dead dog to spawn an entire franchise. But here we are, with four films that have redefined action cinema and left audiences hungry for more of that particular brand of stylish, no-nonsense mayhem.

The best movies like John Wick share a few key ingredients: protagonists with very particular sets of skills, action sequences that feel more like deadly ballet than mindless chaos, and stories that waste no time getting to the good stuff.

1. The Matrix (1999)

The Wachowskis created something revolutionary here, and Chad Stahelski (John Wick’s director) actually worked as Keanu Reeves’ stunt double on this film. Neo’s journey from office drone to reality-bending warrior feels like a spiritual predecessor to Wick’s return from retirement.

2. The Raid (2011)

This Indonesian film is basically a 90-minute fight scene with just enough plot to justify the carnage. The martial arts choreography is absolutely insane. If John Wick’s gun-fu impressed you, The Raid’s silat-based fighting will blow your mind.

3. Heat (1995)

The downtown Los Angeles shootout is one of the most technically perfect action sequences ever filmed. Robert De Niro and Al Pacino bring that same calm, methodical approach to violence that makes John Wick so compelling.

4. Mad Max: Fury Road (2015)

Tom Hardy’s Max is a road warrior with serious skills, and the film’s practical effects and relentless pacing create that same sense of momentum that drives the Wick films. George Miller crafted something genuinely special here.

5. The Bourne Identity (2002)

Matt Damon’s Jason Bourne wakes up with no memory but discovers he’s extremely good at violence. The apartment fight and the Mini Cooper chase through Paris remain benchmarks for grounded action.

6. The Bourne Ultimatum (2007)

Takes everything great about the first film and cranks it up. The Waterloo Station sequence is a masterclass in tension, and the rooftop chase through Tangier is pure adrenaline.

7. Leon: The Professional (1994)

The original hitman-with-a-heart story. Jean Reno’s Leon is a quiet, methodical killer who forms an unlikely bond with a young Natalie Portman. Gary Oldman’s unhinged DEA agent provides the same kind of memorable villain that the Wick films excel at creating.

8. Drive (2011)

Ryan Gosling’s unnamed driver says almost nothing, but when he acts, it’s with sudden, shocking violence. Nicolas Winding Refn bathes the film in neon and synth-wave, creating a visual language that feels like John Wick’s spiritual cousin.

9. Terminator 2: Judgment Day (1991)

Arnold Schwarzenegger’s T-800 operates with the same relentless efficiency as John Wick, methodically eliminating threats with whatever’s available. The LA River chase remains one of cinema’s most iconic action sequences.

10. The Dark Knight (2008)

Christopher Nolan’s Batman operates in the shadows, using detective work and brutal hand-to-hand combat instead of flashy powers. The semi-truck flip and interrogation scene feel grounded in a way superhero films rarely achieve.

11. Mission: Impossible - Fallout (2018)

Tom Cruise’s commitment to practical stunts rivals anything in the John Wick franchise. The bathroom fight, the HALO jump, the helicopter chase. This is blockbuster filmmaking at its most impressive.

12. Casino Royale (2006)

Daniel Craig’s Bond reinvented as a brutal, physical presence. The parkour chase through the construction site and the stairwell fight showcase a rawer, more visceral Bond than audiences had seen before.

13. Baby Driver (2017)

Ansel Elgort’s Baby isn’t exactly John Wick, but he’s got skills behind the wheel that are just as impressive. Edgar Wright uses music to drive the action, creating a rhythm that’s addictive.

14. Speed (1994)

Pure velocity distilled into film form. Keanu Reeves (yes, the same Keanu) plays a cop trapped on a bus that will explode if it drops below 50 mph. The film never stops moving.

15. The Batman (2022)

Robert Pattinson’s Batman is a force of vengeance, methodically hunting criminals through Gotham’s shadows. The Penguin car chase and final flood sequence showcase Matt Reeves’ eye for practical, immersive action.
