Magical animation and fantastical journeys for Ghibli fans

Spirited Away captured something most animated films only dream about: the feeling of stepping into a world that operates on its own magical logic, where spirits run bathhouses and parents turn into pigs. If you’ve watched Chihiro’s journey a dozen times and need something new, these twelve films deliver similar wonder.
1. WALL·E (2008)
Pixar’s greatest achievement barely uses dialogue for its first forty minutes. A lonely robot cleans an abandoned Earth, falls in love, and ends up on a space cruise ship full of immobile humans. The environmental message is clear, but the romance between WALL-E and EVE is pure cinema.
2. Coco (2017)
Pixar again, this time exploring the Mexican Land of the Dead with stunning orange and purple visuals. Miguel wants to be a musician despite his family’s ban on music. The final act will destroy you, but in the best way.
3. Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse (2018)
Sony Animation took risks that paid off spectacularly. The comic book aesthetic isn’t decoration; it’s integral to how the story moves. Miles Morales’ origin gets the weight it deserves, and the multiverse concept sets up endless possibilities.
4. Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse (2023)
The sequel somehow tops the original. The animation styles multiply as Miles travels through different universes, each with its own look. The cliffhanger ending is frustrating, but the two-plus hours before it are animated filmmaking at its peak.
5. The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring (2001)
Not animated, but hear me out. Peter Jackson’s Middle-earth has the same handcrafted quality that defines Ghibli. Every prop, costume, and location feels lived-in. The adventure through strange lands scratches the same itch.
6. Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind (2004)
Again, not animated, but Michel Gondry’s film has a whimsical visual style that matches Miyazaki’s imagination. Jim Carrey and Kate Winslet navigate erasing memories, and the shifting, dreamlike sequences feel like they could be in a Ghibli film.
7. The Grand Budapest Hotel (2014)
Wes Anderson’s dollhouse aesthetic creates a similar sense of crafted wonder. The hotel is as much a character as the spirits in Spirited Away’s bathhouse. Ralph Fiennes’ concierge is unforgettable, and the stacked aspect ratios tell their own story.
8. Her (2013)
Spike Jonze’s sci-fi romance is quiet, beautiful, and strange in the way Miyazaki can be. Joaquin Phoenix falls in love with an AI, and the film never mocks him for it. The pastel future Los Angeles looks like a watercolor painting.
9. E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial (1982)
Spielberg’s family classic shares Spirited Away’s sense of a child navigating an overwhelming situation. The alien is both strange and gentle, and the final goodbye still works. It’s sentimental in the best way.
10. La La Land (2016)
Damien Chazelle’s musical exists in a heightened reality where people break into song at Griffith Observatory. The fantasy sequences, especially the planetarium scene, have genuine magic. The ending is bittersweet in a very Ghibli way.
11. The Truman Show (1998)
Jim Carrey discovers his entire life is a TV show. The artificial world of Seahaven has a constructed beauty that parallels animation’s total control over every frame. Truman’s journey outward is as heroic as Chihiro’s.
12. Everything Everywhere All at Once (2022)
The Daniels’ multiverse adventure matches Ghibli’s imagination with live action. Michelle Yeoh jumps between realities that include hot dog fingers and rock sentience. It shouldn’t work, but heart holds it all together.
Animation as a Portal
Spirited Away works because Miyazaki commits fully to his world’s rules. These films, animated or not, share that commitment. They don’t wink at the audience or apologize for their strangeness. They invite you in and trust you to keep up.
Start with WALL-E or Coco if you want traditional animation. Try Spider-Verse for something more experimental. The Grand Budapest Hotel is perfect if you want live-action whimsy.
